Easing Into Summer
Support for the Nervous System
Early summer is such a beautiful time—longer days, blooming flowers, the return of light and life. But along with this social calendars fill up, and somewhere in the middle of all the excitement and movement that comes with this season we forget to breathe. If you’re feeling a little stretched thin or like your nervous system could use some relief, you’re not alone.
At Hedgerow, we’re all about small-batch, intentional herbal remedies that support your mind, body, and spirit. One of our favorite go-to blends for this time of year is our Don’t Panic tincture blend. I used to call this tincture the “Stage Fright” blend, as the effects of these soothing Blue Vervain, Valerian Root, and Motherwort can be felt quite immediately in moments of acute panic, dread, and overwhelm.
Let’s talk about how the herbs in this blend help us reconnect with calm.
Blue Vervain is often referred to as the "herb for the Type A personality." If you find yourself holding stress in your neck and shoulders, clenching your jaw, or struggling to "turn off" at night, this might be your plant. Blue vervain works as a potent nervine and mild sedative. It helps relax muscular tension, ease nervous irritation, and quiet the mind. Think of it as the friend who reminds you to unclench your jaw and drop your shoulders.
Valerian has been used for centuries to support rest and calm the nervous system. It's often the herb people think of for insomnia, but in smaller doses such as in our Don’t Panic formula, valerian is incredibly grounding without bringing about drowsiness. Herbalists like David Winston note that valerian is helpful when anxiety comes with a racing heart or restless energy. Paired with blue vervain, this herb’s ability to gently calm the mind is unmatched.
Motherwort is especially helpful for anxiety that feels like fluttery heart palpitations or panic. This herb’s calming effect on the cardiovascular system makes it especially suited for individuals whose stress shows up somatically, when anxiety manifests physically through the chest—racing heartbeat, tightness, hovering on the verge of tears. Traditionally, it has been used during emotionally turbulent times—grief, postpartum shifts, and transitional life stages—making it a reliable companion for cultivating inner steadiness. Herbalist Susan Weed often highlights its affinity for the emotional heart—it soothes, supports, and helps you feel held. The name says it all: it brings a motherly comfort in the moments you feel frayed.
Back to Balance
When combined, these three herbs create a synergy that supports both body and mind. Blue vervain helps you let go of tension, valerian gently slows things down, and motherwort brings you back to center.
Take 1-3 droppers full straight or diluted in water/tea for immediate support in moments of high tension.
