Singing Nettles: Medieval Songs of Winter with Devon Rawlings

  • Hedgerow Herb Co. 811 East Burnside Street Portland, OR, 97214 United States (map)

Come sing with us!

Singing Nettles is a community acapella folk song group. All ages and abilities are welcome.

This regular folk singing group, meeting twice/month, is a lovely opportunity to learn folk songs, sing in community, and build connections. No commitment is required, though the more we sing, the more we build our individual and collective voices!

Devon is a living history enthusiast with a focus on art and culture from the medieval ages. In her Singing Nettle workshop, she will offer a beginner's introduction to the world of medieval music and guide the group through a few examples of religious and secular songs. Participants will walk away with a few options for tunes especially appropriate for the dark half of the year, when music is a meditation on hope and gratitude.

About Singing Nettles

Each meeting of the Singing Nettles begins with a participatory workshop to learn new songs and skills from a rotating cast of teachers. After the hour long skillshare workshop, an open singing circle will arise, wherein anyone may lead a song or perform a ballad for the group. Workshop teachers bring songs from a variety of cultures, not always but mostly stemming from American and European folk traditions. Depending on the theme of the evening, we may focus on harmonies, vocal technique, foreign language lyrics, or history of songs and traditions.

We welcome you to come engage with this friendly singing community, hosted at the lovely premises of Hedgerow Herb Co.
