Willow Ornament Crafting

  • Hedgerow Herb Co. 811 East Burnside Street Portland, OR, 97214 United States (map)

Whether you celebrate Christmas and want to give little ornaments gifts or you simply like to
adorn your home with cute little decorations. These are a fun, quick to make, beginner friendly
way to get introduced to willow.

In this 3-hour class you will get to choose two (or all three if you are fast!) ornaments you
would like to make. The first option is a bark star using willow bark with which you will learn some simple bark weaving techniques. The swallow woven with hand harvested willow sticks will teach you the figure 8 weave. Weaving the little tree ornament, you will learn an artful binding technique.

Please bring to class a sharp pair of secateurs or some sort of bud cutting scissors. Essentially
something sharp that’s meant to cut sticks. If you have a tapestry needle, that would be very
handy
(I will have a few, but we will need to share them so if you have your own, bring it!) You
are welcome to bring any fancy ribbons you feel excited about to incorporate into your projects
as well. I will be providing jute twine, which gives a more rustic look.

Meet Marisa

Marisa is a basket weaver, seamstress, hide tanner and a person of many skills. She has studied the craft of basket weaving under Margret Matthewson. Marisa is passionate about bringing old traditions new life as a way of divesting from the overculture. She has studied the ways of folk medicine and folk magic, bringing an animist worldview to her craft work. When she is not weaving, mending, or making, she may be singing in the woods she resides in off grid, harvesting plants,  building relationships and experiencing the fullness of what it means to be alive.
