Medicinal Uses: Black Elder or Sambucus nigra is the Elder native to the European continent brought over by European Settlers. Our PNW Native Blue Elder (Sambucus caerulea) has nearly the same uses. Elderflower is used topically to soften the skin. Internally, the flowers are indicated for bronchitis and fever. Maude Grieve suggests a cup of elderflower and peppermint tea at the first sign of a feverish cold; she writes to drink the tea as hot as possible while in bed, before sleeping, to promote perspiration. The tea is also soothing to sore throats and makes for a wonderful blood purifier when drank every morning in spring time.
Preparation & Dosage: Tincture (1:5, 40%) 2-4ml 3x daily.
Tea - 1 cup of boiling water over 2 teaspoons of flowers or berries and steep for 10 mins. drink hot up to 3x daily.
