Oregon Grape (Mahonia aquifolium)

Benefit: Reduces inflammation and combats bacterial infections associated with eczema.

Mechanism: Oregon grape contains berberine, an alkaloid with potent anti-inflammatory and antimicrobial properties. It helps reduce the inflammation and redness associated with eczema flare-ups and can prevent secondary infections that often accompany broken skin due to scratching.

Calendula (Calendula officinalis)

Benefit: Soothes irritated skin and promotes cell regeneration

Mechanism: Calendula is known for its anti-inflammatory, antiseptic, and wound-healing properties. It reduces inflammation, calms irritated skin, and promotes the healing of damaged tissues. Calendula also helps moisturize the skin, preventing dryness and further irritation.

Chamomile (Matricaria chamomilla)

Benefit: Calms and soothes the skin, reducing itching and inflammation.

Mechanism: Chamomile contains compounds like bisabolol and chamazulene, which have anti-inflammatory and calming effects. It helps to reduce itching, redness, and irritation, making it an excellent herb for soothing eczema flare-ups. Chamomile also has mild antiseptic properties, helping to keep the skin clean and reduce the risk of infection.

Bring two cups of water to a low, gentle simmer. Add the herbs to the hot water. Cover and let the herbs decoct on the low simmer for 20-30 minutes to create a strong infusion.

Strain the herbal infusion to remove the plant material. Allow the infusion to cool to a comfortable, warm temperature.

Soak a clean cloth or compress in the herbal infusion. Gently wring out the excess liquid and apply the compress to the affected areas of the skin. Leave the compress on the skin for 5-15 minutes before repeating the process.

Apply 2-3 times a day or as needed to soothe and reduce eczema flare ups.
