Hallowed Hedgerow: Ghost Stories & Samhain Singing

  • Hedgerow Herb Co. 811 East Burnside Street Portland, OR, 97214 United States (map)

Join us October 25th at 6pm to honor the dead and our ancestral heritage, to foster community and celebrate the coming of winter. Samhain is an ancient Celtic festival marking the end of the harvest season and the onset of winter, and is thought to be the origin of our modern holiday- Halloween. Celebrated at the end of October and into early November, it was believed to be a time when the veil between the living and the dead was thinnest, allowing spirits to roam the earth. We have so many fun things planned for this gathering!

Be sure to secure your ticket for this one early, as we have limited space due to the nature of the event.

We will be serving GF soul cakes (included in your ticket), and have plenty to drink! Come partake in a tarot reading by Danille Renée (book here!), parlor games such as our divinatory soul cakes and snap apple, and storytelling of singing corpses. There will be a demonstration and materials provided on how to weave a simple corn dolly, a rustic autumnal charm as we share songs and stories. We encourage attendees to share about their dead and unique heritage, or come with a ghost story or wyrd telling to share as we weave. Songs that have to do with your heritage, ghosts, funerals, murder, or the Autumn would all be appropriate. Following this, our dear friend Ell will teach us songs of the season. You do not need to be a singer to sing with us! We encourage participation in singing but you are also welcome to simply sit and enjoy.

We will have an altar to the dead set up same as last year. We encourage you to bring photos and memorabilia of your beloved dead as well as offerings for your ancestors. Examples of this could be tobacco, bread, or coins.

Shamhna shona daoibh go léir!
