Shibori Dye Class

  • Hedgerow Herb Co. 811 E Burnside St. Portland United States (map)

Learn to dye in the Shibori style with herbs and teas!

Plants bring vibrancy and color to our world in more ways than one. Peoples from all over the world have worked with plants to color their garments. Though natural dyes is still found in many traditional cultures around the world, artificial dyes came into use in the 1850s changing the global garment industry. Find creative connection to the plant kingdom and join fiber artist Janessa fortes Bautista in learning the art of natural dyeing at Hedgerow Herb Co. Janessa will be guiding us through the hands on process of dyeing both bandanas and tea towels in the japanese dye style known as Shibori. While this style traditionally uses indigo as its plant pigment, you will learn the art of using different herbs and teas to various different pigments, allowing you to learn both a beautiful traditional style of dye and the basics of dyeing with plants and tea, giving you a launching point to start or deepen your own plant dye practice.
